Pen Snob Society is a minority-owned literary and publishing company dedicated to developing meaningful stories for children and families through words, art, and movement.
Rooted in creativity and inclusivity, Pen Snob Society creates and supports storytelling with a small-town sensibility—stories that encourage emotional awareness, curiosity, and connection. Our work centers on engaging picture books and story-based projects that honor imagination, feeling, and lived experience.
At its core, Pen Snob Society exists to nurture thoughtful storytelling and support creative voices—building a community where stories are shared with care and intention.
Pen Snob Society was founded by author and illustrator Sheila E. Hughes, whose work is guided by a deep desire to help others feel seen and heard. She believes that by creating space for connection and encouraging understanding, stories can offer children and adults healing, comfort, and opportunities for personal growth through the shared experience of reading.
Sheila has always been the family storyteller, a gift she inherited from her father. The children in her family have been a constant source of inspiration, prompting her to create stories designed to help them build a love of reading while encouraging young imaginations to flourish.
Along the way, she discovered that storytelling was more than a creative outlet — it became a powerful tool for building meaningful long-distance relationships. Through stories, she formed deeper connections with family members living thousands of miles away. Two unexpected rewards emerged: her work sparked a love of writing in the next generation of family storytellers, and many of her stories began to serve as therapeutic support tools for children who struggle to connect with and express their emotions.
A subtle bridge formed between her writing and somatic science, blending creativity and connection in ways she hadn’t initially anticipated.
Born and raised in Ohio, Sheila’s connection to family and community deeply shapes her work. Her stories range from playful, movement-based picture books to longer-form narratives shaped by nature, memory, and intergenerational care.
Through words and illustration, Sheila approaches storytelling as an invitation to slow down, notice what matters, and hold space for feeling, curiosity, and belonging.

Sheila is a passionate storyteller, sister, and aunt whose love of story is rooted in family, connection, and shared moments. Beyond her literary work, her greatest joy is bringing stories to life—especially when they inspire curiosity, creativity, and young imaginations. With a background in project management, Sheila brings care and intention to every story she helps shape.

Langston is an imaginative, elementary school-aged storyteller with a love for creating new adventures! When he’s not writing, he’s dancing, singing, drawing, and—of course—eating donuts. Langston believes every story is an adventure waiting to be told, and he hopes his first book will bring joy to young readers everywhere.

Sheila and Langston’s storytelling journey began with shared stories and playful imagination. Their bond grew through reading books, making up stories, and bringing characters to life. Over time, their creative exchanges inspired them to co-write How Did You Get in My House Sneaky Mouse?, a fun and interactive book that invites young readers to join the adventure.
